| April 26 - May 5 | Alice in Wonderland at City Theater Company
City Theater Company, Delaware’s own Off-Broadway, presents as part of
its Community Series Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, adapted by
American director and actor Andre Gregory. Originally conceived and
produced by the Manhattan Theatre Project in 1970, this rendition of
the classic tale concentrates on movement and language rather than
special effects or crazy costumes. Director Georgiana Staley (last season’s family show Peter Pan) and a talented teenage cast effectively bring to life Alice’s world—using their own bodies and voices to suggest the rabbit hole the heroine falls into, the croquet match with the Queen, the encounter with a caterpillar and his hookah pipe. Inventive, imaginative, and clever, this surrealistic take on a family favorite is sure to enchant children and adults alike. In keeping with the spirit of CTC’s Community Series, the two-weekend run of Alice in Wonderland at the Baby Grand Theater will also feature music, art, and dance presentations by students from area schools as well as lobby activities for youngsters. Opening night festivities include a Mad Hatter tea party immediately following the show. All performances will be at the Baby Grand Theatre at 818 N. Market Street in Wilmington. Show dates and times: Thursday, April 26, 7:30pm (Pay-What-You-Can Preview) Friday, April 27, 7:30pm Saturday April 28, 7:30pm Sunday, April 29, 2:00pm Friday, May 4, 7:30pm Saturday, May 5, 7:30pm Ticket prices are still the best rate in town, at $12 for students/children and $17 general admission. | June 3 | Choral Concert by Delaware Valley Chorale
The Delaware Valley Chorale presents its final concert of the season in June under the direction of Maestro
David Christopher featuring great choral compositions of the 20th Century.
American Treasures of the 20th Century (concert) Sunday June 3, 2007 3:00 p.m. Grace Methodist Church 900 N. Washington St Wilmington Tickets $15.00 adults/ $10.00 seniors/students $ 5.00 children under 12 One of the major works on the program is "Lovelife Dances" by American composer William Copper, who is a resident of Delaware. His music for chorus, orchestra, and chamber ensembles has been presented around the world. Lovelife Dances, a survey of centuries of English poetry set to music in triple meter, has been performed repeatedly throughout the United States since its premiere in 2001. The concert will also feature an arrangement of a Spritual by well known local African-American composer Daniel L. Ridout Jr. Other works on the program include Copland's folk song settings, "Sure on this Shing Night" by famous area composer Samuel Barber, and choral works by Randall Thompson, Kent Newbury, and Eugene Butler. The DVC, one of the area's premiere choral ensembles has been presenting choral concerts in the Delaware Valley Area for the past 23 years. Made up of auditioned amateur as well as professional singers from around the region, the group has performed a full spectrum of great choral music in their own concert series as well as with local orchestras such as the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Newark Symphony, Delaware County Symphony and Kennett Symphony Orchestra. | SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL IS ASKING FOR YOUR HELP…
www.svdpusa.org Whether it’s a fire, a hurricane, an earthquake, or a flood, when the next disaster strikes, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will offer HOPE. HOPE, which stands for Help Our People Eat, is a 42-foot-long, state-of-the-art mobile feeding kitchen that the Society has added to its arsenal of charitable projects. Donated by Bear Creek Country Kitchens, a leading manufacturer of dry soup mixes and other products, HOPE will make its official debut at the Society’s Annual Meeting in Indianapolis August 30-September 2, 2006 and be deployed to the Gulf Coast immediately thereafter to serve persons suffering the lingering effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. According to Michael Hofstee, President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Council for the Diocese of Wilmington, “This is particularly appropriate given the recent assessment of the mid-Atlantic region to withstand a Katrina-force Hurricane. In the event that we take a direct hit like they did in the Gulf Coast, the HOPE vehicle will greatly improve our ability to help locally.” Hofstee continued, “We look forward to hopefully being able to host HOPE when it tours the country at some time in the future.” The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is seeking sponsors to offset the cost of outfitting and maintaining HOPE. Interested parties should contact the Society at 314-576-3993. Donations to the local conferences can be made through Society of St. Vincent de Paul c/o the local Catholic parish, or to the Council of Wilmington address at 108 Downs Drive, Wilmington, DE 19807. The largest lay Catholic organization in the world, operating in 135 countries, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is best known for the personal visits of its members to the homes of the poor and needy and its thrift stores and food pantries. Established in France in 1833 by a college student named Frederic Ozanam, the Society began its existence in the United States 12 years later, in 1845, in St. Louis. Within the Diocese of Wilmington, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Wilmington is made up of 482 members in 33 conferences throughout the entire state of Delaware and the eastern shore of Maryland. Last year, over 19,700 people were helped, and over half a million dollars was spent in aid to clients. | Division of Child Support Enforcement releases new wanted poster of deadbeat parents
The Division of Child Support Enforcement is searching for another batch of deadbeat
parents and has released a new poster with the names, faces and descriptions of 10 parents who owe
$140,000 to $16,000 in unpaid child support. All are believed to live in Delaware. If anyone has
information about any of these individuals they should contact: DE Crime Stoppers 1-800-TIP-3333 or
email crimestoppers@state.de.us
The poster can be seen online at www.dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dcse. “The parents featured in these posters do not want to be found and don't want to see themselves in the newspaper,” division director Charles Hayward said. “These parents have failed to make payments for at least six months and have not appeared in court despite outstanding warrants. So far, roughly a half of those featured on the posters have been caught, surrendered to police or been intercepted due to their outstanding warrants.” Many other parents have come forward to pay their child support, even though they weren’t on the first poster, Hayward added. The posters, which launched in September 2006, are part of increased child support enforcement efforts, as the division works to collect millions owed to about 72,000 Delaware children and their caretakers. The posters are published on the division's Web site and posted in government and social-service offices throughout the state to encourage people to call the division or Crime Stoppers with tips about where deadbeat parents live, work, and whether they are hiding money. In addition the posters are featured in an advertising campaign on Delawareonline. According to Delawareonline statistics, the ad campaign has generated over 300,000 impressions with 5,155 redirects to the Child Support website from viewers clicking the ad which is 33 times the national average! Delaware collects only about 60 cents of every dollar owed, a figure that has remained steady for about a decade, officials said. The state collected about $54 million of the $90 million owed in current support during the 2004-05 federal fiscal year. « hide details |

| “Move Over” Law Protects Emergency Workers
A new law to protect emergency workers and first responders has taken
effect in Delaware. Called the “Move Over” law, it requires any driver
approaching a stopped emergency vehicle that has its lights activated,
to either move over into a lane that is not next to the emergency
vehicle, or to reduce his or her speed to a “safe speed” while passing
the emergency vehicle if changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe.
The law applies specifically to roadways having two or more lanes going
in the same direction.
“Anyone who works alongside our highways is particularly vulnerable to being hurt by inattentive and careless drivers,” said Tricia Roberts, Director of the Office of Highway Safety. “Sadly, dozens of law enforcement officers alone in Delaware have been injured and even killed by passing motorists while working outside of their vehicles.” “Emergency workers on our highways, whether they are law enforcement officers, firefighters, or EMS personnel, depend upon all motorists to be attentive to their presence. This law is intended to enhance the safety of emergency workers in the performance of their duties on our roadways,” according to Colonel Thomas F. MacLeish, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police. State law enforcement officials pushed for passage of the law during the last legislative session. At the time, 32 other states already had “Move Over” laws on the books. That number may now be as high as 38. The “Move Over” Law applies to law enforcement vehicles, EMS vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, fire police and park rangers that have stopped on a roadway and have their lights activated. A law already on the books in Delaware requires motorists to yield the right of way to “moving” emergency vehicles that are using either their lights or sirens, or both. The penalty for violating the new “Move Over” law is $25.00 plus court costs. However, police are hoping for voluntary public compliance of the law so that they won’t have to take enforcement action. Although the law only address roads with two or more lanes going in the same direction, Office of Highway Safety officials are hoping that on two-lane only roads, motorists will slow down to a “safe speed” anyway to ensure the safety of emergency responders on those roads. « hide details |

| Help Available for Medicare Drug Coverage
Wilmington, DE -- Some 840 residents of Delaware may still be able to get
extra help paying for Medicare’s Part D prescription drug coverage,
even if
the subsidy they received in 2006 is not automatically renewed, according to
the Medicare Rx Access Network of Delaware. A breakdown of the number of
residents eligible for help is also available on a county by county basis.
This extra help is not automatic, but it is available by applications through Medicare’s Low-Income Subsidy, which offers various levels of assistance for different income and resource levels, and through the Delaware Prescription Assistance Program (DPAP). These 840 Delaware residents automatically received a generous subsidy this year for Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage because they qualified either for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the federal income-supplement program; Medicaid, the federal/state healthcare program for low-income seniors and people with disabilities; or the Medicare Savings Program, which helps low-income Medicare beneficiaries pay for Medicare Part A and/or Part B. These residents may no longer qualify for these programs (and, as a result, have lost the automatic Part D subsidy) for a number of reasons, including increased income or no longer being disabled. They are among some 632,000 Medicare beneficiaries nationwide in the same situation. All of those affected were recently notified by Medicare through the mail. “I urge those affected in Delaware re-apply for Medicare’s Low-Income Subsidy for 2007. They may qualify for one of the other levels of assistance,” notes Frank Howard of the Medicare Rx Access Network of Delaware. Help with the Low-Income Subsidy application form is available at the local Social Security office, by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, and by calling 1-800-MEDICARE or visiting the agency’s Website at www.medicare.gov. Local residents also can call ELDERinfo at 800-336-9500 or 302-739-6266 or the Delaware Prescription Assistance Program (DPAP) at 1-800-996-9969. The Delaware Prescription Assistance Program (DPAP) provides assistance with medically necessary drugs to qualified seniors. To qualify for this help through DPAP, Delaware residents must be at least age 65 or disabled, and have an annual income of no more than $19,600 ($26,400 for a couple) or have prescription costs exceeding 40 percent of their income. The Delaware Prescription Assistance Program can be reached at 1-800-996-9969. “I want to reassure people who no longer qualify for the automatic subsidy that they will not lose their drug coverage,” notes Howard. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, those who do nothing will be re-enrolled in their current plan for 2007 though, with no subsidy, they may be subject to the plan’s regular fees. They can also change plans during open enrollment, which is November 15 to December 31, 2006, as well as during three extra months beyond the end of open enrollment without incurring a late-enrollment penalty. EXAMPLES OF LEVELS OF ASSISTANCE UNDER THE PART D LOW-INCOME SUBSIDY: ? Annual income $9,800 to $13,230 (couple $13,200 to $17,820) Assets less than $7,500 (couple $12,000) No premiums, deductible, coverage gap $2.15 to $5.35 copay per prescription Assets less than $11,500 (couple $23,000) No premiums or deductible, 15% copayment in coverage gap $2.15 to $5.35 copay per prescription ? Annual income $13,230 to $14,700 (couple $17,820 to $19,800) Assets less than $11,500 (couple $23,000) Reduced premiums, reduced deductible, 15% copay in coverage gap $2.15 to $5.35 copay per prescription **Resources do not include home or car.** « hide details |

| Division of Child Support Enforcement releases wanted posters of deadbeat parents
The Division of Child Support Enforcement is searching for deadbeat
parents and releases, on a regular basis, a new poster with the names,
faces and descriptions of 10 parents who owe $140,000 to $16,000 in
unpaid child support. All are believed to live in Delaware. If anyone
has information about any of these individuals they should contact: DE
Crime Stoppers 1-800-TIP-3333 or email crimestoppers@state.de.us
All posters released by the Division can be seen online at www.dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dcse.
